      Dave as for your comment about ATtiny’s lacking USB – it appears you are correct for this model with atmel not marketing it as supporting USB. There is a software package that enables USB on most AVRs called V-USB which enables it to have USB (http://www.obdev.at/products/vusb/index.html)
      (just looked this up now on the project page)

      That rotary encoder has a few hidden functions in it – there’s apparently a double-click hold up/down as well
