Any Altium discounts on the way?
« on: December 11, 2017, 09:34:27 pm »
Hi, anyone have any inside knowledge about Altium price drop as I'm trying to get my manger to get Altium in over their existing Cadstar.

Got a quote today and it's pretty damned expensive.

I'm in the UK if that matters. Also Altium 18 drops on Friday so hoping introductory rate?

Cheers

over their existing Cadstar.

What is wrong with Cadstar?

Hmm if it is a new release I would of thought unlikely to discount.

How much you been quoted?

Have heard Cadence are running some competitive swap out deals if that helps.

Here in NL, I received a quote for €5k6 and after one email saying that such amount is hard to justify, they came down to €4k2 (25% discount). So some negotiation should be possible :-+

4k2 sounds a lot better than the 7k the quoted me, what did they ask for annual subscription?

4k is still a lot for a hammer, I'm always a little amazed about these sales people, they make it sound like their software will design your circuits and boards for you  ;D

I don't believe Altium will sell you AD without taking the 12 month annual support package with it.

I checked the license doesn't include any support or updates which is awful. It should be the first 12 months then maintenance license to keep getting then.

Pretty unimpressed

The €5k6 is for an upgrade from AD10, from the price I was assuming that they are charging a full new license but apparently not.. ;)

We regularly get emails from our account rep offering a substantial discount on an additional seat, but I'm not sure if that's an end of year thing or what.  I think you can often wrangle a discount out of them if you push, but I'm not sure if the reps in the UK have the same leeway as they do in the US.  Are you dealing with Altium directly, or going through a distributor?

Have you asked them if they can make  discount as before if you are an Eagle user and may want to try Altium?

Last license I bought was back in 2008 for about €2k5. Altium was going to make it affordable for everyone. I haven't seen them adding much functionality in the last 9 years to justify spending €7k. The problem with software manufacturers is their business model, to justify annual subscription fees the mostly do cosmetic or irrelevant functional changes.

A hammer is a a hammer is a hammer, how to sell you the hammer twice? Ask the software sales people.

Just push back and say you have other options. It is like dealing with the cable company. Magically, the price drops a lot once you they think you are serious about the competition. They have the mindset that $8k is chump change to companies. Just let them know that is not the case.
