sequentially numbering all components? (duplicate components)
« on: December 13, 2013, 08:35:31 am »
So I have a bunch of components in my alluvium schematic that are out of order, I copy pasted some resistors/capacitors/etc that I used a bunch, so I have replicates.

Like all my decoupling capacitors are CDxxxxx, all my filter resistors are FRxxx, etc.

I found the tool to select all common components, so I search for CD*, and all my decoupling capacitors are selected.

Since I have alot of parts but I am not keen on renaming all of them (hundreds of clicks), is there a way to make it so the program assigns them all unique names, like it will go from CD1.....CDwhatever?

This is so I can compile without 5000 billion errors.

Have a look in the Tools menu, There's options there for clearing and reassignment designators automatically.
(backup first in case it renames stuff you don't want)

1) "Tools" -> "Annotate schematics" -> "Reset Duplicates" (dropdown list from "Reset All" button. Choose "Reset All" if you wish)
2) Same window: click "Accept Changes (Create ECO)" -> click "Execute Changes" -> close ECO window.
3) Click "Update Changes list"
4) Same window: click "Accept Changes (Create ECO)" -> click "Execute Changes" -> close ECO window.

Experiment to your heart content, with this. You can always go back with Reset All and the four steps above.

It's generally a good idea to have your component designators in the library ending in a question mark. That way Altium knows where to put the number to your designator when you annotate the schematic. (i.e. R?, C? RF?, U?, CD? etc.)

Great. Thanks for the help I got it all worked out now. I spent maybe an hour before renaming things manually, the thought of ever doing that again sends tingles down my spine.

 :phew:
