Chris mentioned sending out microphones to interview guests. I'd like to know what brand/model he prefers. Also, does he just record the Skype conversation, or does each participant record his audio locally and send that to Chris for mixing?

For interviews at least the recordings and call is still done using Mumble. It works really well. Mumble can produce an audio file for each user separately so participants don't have to send files to Chris.
They usually send out the CAD U37 microphone if needed.
