3D Laser Engraving Machine...
« on: February 24, 2010, 06:35:29 am »
hi everybody i can't understand how this machines work...

here are some videos of the machines working and the finished products...

well here is my question...

you have a laser beam traveling in to the crystal you can do this and move the laser left and right easily but...

when the laser beam is travelling through the crystal how can you make the burn spot at the right altitude???

how can they stop the travelling laser beam in a determinate altitude to draw a burned point in the crystal???

because if they don't stop it with something it will keep on travelling farder than the crystal or will burn the crystal when the laser beam touch the crystal...

i attached a self made schematic drawing of two laser beams travelling one keeps on travelling through the crystal and the other stops in a determinate altitude and burn one of the points that composes the photo...

i expect that someone can explain this to me or recommend me some bibliography or something because i'm really intrigued about it...

 ???

thank you all for your time...

This process is called Sub-Surface Laser Engraving, or SSLE. It's a pretty expensive and delicate process, but it's getting cheaper. It's usually used for novelty items, but there are some companies out there using it for higher purposes.

It's accomplished by focusing an intense beam of light very accurately on a point inside the glass, and triggering it for a very short time. The laser is only turned on long enough to heat the glass at that small point of focus until it forms a tiny fracture, and that small imperfection is seen as a dot hovering in three dimensions within the glass. The other areas that the beam passes through don't receive enough light energy to effect a change. The excellent heat insulating properties of glass help keep the heat at the point of focus from spreading quickly.

In the spirit of answering in kind, I've drawn up a simple picture to do honor to your illustration. :)

This is one of those things that bugged me too until I looked into it. I hope that this gets you started if you wish to delve deeper.

Edit: Just realized I forgot to show the beam refracting when it hit the glass, it does that as well.

Guys sorry if I did not write there, but could not find the appropriate topic. The project needs an engraving machine and I can not choose between two models (Meterk Laser Engraver Printer 1500mW or WER 1500mW Miniature DIY Laser Engraving) :-//. Please, share with me your thoughts.

Thank you all!  :-+

Those so called 1500mW laser engravers are made by NeJe, and the actual power is ~200mW.
I wrote a review in the what did you buy today thread, and also a review in Amazon comment zone of the Meterk product.

Thank you! And how will this increase in the power of the machine affect in practice?

Just read your review, I realized that the machine is not in the best condition. But what would you advise me? I've just looked at the short overview on this site, but can you tell me more informative?

Thanks ...

It's a pity :-\, but I was so hoping for these brands. To me, a lot of guys here have recommended them ... And what kind of security do you mean?

P.S. And I wish you luck in building your laser engraver!) :-+
