Antistatic
« on: April 18, 2015, 10:37:13 am »
Hi guys

Bit of a noob question, but are the standard plastic tubes that DIP ICs come in antistatic?  I've never thought so, but I have a guy who's sent me a CPU in one of these cellotaped to a bit of paper.

They are safe for static sensitive components.

Probably dissipative, if they hve any sort of conductive layer I don't know.   The plastic is quite thick, so maybe that is deemed sufficient to prevent zapping through it as long as it is dissipative.  Personally, i assume tubes and smd tape to be mechanically protective, they then go into conductive bags for static protection.

Extruded or injection molded plastic formulations (pe,pp,pet,ps,abs...) can easily be made sufficiently conductive (couple of Mohms) for ESD protection.
