Are these transistors ok?
« on: December 14, 2015, 02:52:13 pm »
I'm thinking of using these transistors to switch a 12v 120w heater and a 12v 40w heater, would they be ok to use for this? Also will these heat sinks be good for them? Thanks again, in advance!

Eh... you can do better for the 120W heater, you're wasting rather a lot in the FET. How's this? Should barely need a heat sink.

Of course, it might not matter if the FET will be dissipating heat into the same space as the heater. It'll just contribute a bit of heat itself. All depends on your application.

I'd look for a FET with a lower on resistance - RDS(on).

120W at 12v is 10A, so 10A through that device with an on resistance of 110 milliohms means it will be dissipating 11 Watts - not too good.

PS.  Remember that you'll need to drive the gate with at least 10v, not the 5 or 3.3v from an MCU....

Ok, thanks for the help! I guess I drive them using a second transistor with a lower control voltage, since I have 12v on the board already!

Logic level (5V): IRL1404
12V: IRF2805

Hi, thanks, I was looking at a similar part.  :)

Does it have to be through hole? If not you're spoiled for choice. IRL1404 is a nice part but you can find much cheaper solutions.

If it has to be through hole the choice of cheap parts in low volume is a bit limited, but there's stuff like AOI514.
