Honestly, I'd recommend a Rigol or an Owon instead.
Agreed.
You can get a 100mhz Owon for just a few more quid, or the 50mhz Rigol is a comparable price and can be hacked to 100mhz.
Also just a note:
You can no longer hack the 1052 (50Mhz model) to the 1102 (100Mhz model). At least not remotely as easily as you were once able to. They have updated the firmware again to remove that vulnerability.
To the OP: I am in the process of building my first lab too, and here's the scope I picked up and I highly recommend it for your first scope.
http://www.rigolna.com/products/digital-oscilloscopes/ds1000e/ds1102e/It's the same price straight from RIGOL, and it works, and has a lot of nice measurement tools and features for the price. I'm quite satisfied with mine, and Dave even recommended it on the blog to people who have really nice expensive scopes, because its light, small, easy to use, and still very useful. Definitely grab the 100Mhz model if you can.
