Avago/Broadcom - PCIe Switch Datasheet???
« on: May 28, 2016, 10:56:53 pm »
Hello

Why are the datasheets from Avago/Broadcom not available publicly?

I actually wanted to determine how difficult it would be to implement a PCIe switch on a PCB. I needed a reference design, a BOM and find out if those chips only needed basic configuration data in an eeprom or if they needed to be programmed from scratch.

I can't understand why those information aren't available, there is absolutely no secret or strategic important information about their products in those datasheets.

Short answer: Because they're a bunch of uptight b*stards. You can find datasheets for PCIe switches from IDT here:

http://www.idt.com/products/interface-connectivity/pci-express-solutions/pci-express-switches

e.g. here's one

http://www.idt.com/document/dst/89hpes16nt16g2-datasheet

If you search around their site you'll find more information on them. Look for "user manual" or "hardware design guide".

Actually I was looking for a PCIe gen3 switch, 16 lanes 5-6 ports.

Only PLX/Broadcom has such ones :/.

Try to find reference designs or open sourced designs that contain the devices you want to use. Maybe that will help you to get started.

IDT has some, looks like you need to register to download from their site but you can find the datasheets elsewhere too:

Yes I know, they have 3 such switches but:
1. They are too huge 32 lanes,  those bga chips have between 484 and 1156 balls.
2. All 3 are marked as "obsolete"
