Been offered some work with a small local business.....
« on: January 22, 2016, 01:13:00 am »
Hello.

I have been offered some work doing repairs for a small but seemingly fairly profitable local business. Changing fuses, fitting bulbs, maybe replacing the occasional blown cap, but mostly mechanical. All easy stuff.

I have very little idea about the business side of it. It's probably not going to be enough work to be worth starting my own company for, and the owner of the business seems happy to take me on as a part time employee. Parts would be paid for by the business, an hourly rate negotiated for my time, but what about money I need for tools? Should I be looking for a high enough wage to cover my equipment, or would it be in with the cost of parts? If it is in with the parts cost, what about wear and tear on the equipment I already own?

I don't know what the local legislation is in your country, but around here, if you are an employee that needs tools to do work-related job, then the boss/company is obligated to provide the proper tools + equipment required for it, including safety equipament (like isolated gloves and shoes).

You can suggest that he buys the tools and equipment, and you use as long as you're working for him. If your contract with him is terminated, the tools and equipament are returned to his company.

Yes, I believe that is the case here too, but the small amount of work I would be doing, would not cover the cost of buying a workshop full of tools. I think you helped me get the answer in a round about about sort of way though. I will buy my own tools, and only take the job if they pay enough to make it worth doing.
