Benjamin Franklin, conducted Kite Experiment?

Hello all,

did Ben Franklin actually conduct the Kite Experiment? In a documentary here: http://youtu.be/uhgo9fAlAQQ it claims he proposed it but never conducted it, the French later conducted his experiment and confirmed his theory.
