Bluetooth Module Debacle
« on: July 07, 2016, 05:03:34 pm »
Hello,

Recently I've purchased a bluetooth module (http://www.seeedstudio.com/wiki/Bluetooth_V4.0_HM-11_BLE_Module), so far i;m trying to test it (and so far its failing)

Here's how i have it setup:

12 is connected to the - terminal of my psu and 9 is connected to the + where the psu is set to 3.3 v and is not showing a CC mode but a CV mode, I can verify that the module is drawing current.

When I tried pairing with it, with default pairing codes 0000 and 1234 it would fail, consistently.

Then I connected pin 2 and pin 4 through 2 voltage dividers, and then connected them to pins 2 and 3 on the arduino, that are designed to be the rx and tx pins based on the example code on the bluetooth module website.

I tried sending the AT commands to the module that return the pairing code, but nothing works.

Any ideas?

is that BLE (low energy) or BT classic?  they have almost nothing in common and are 100% incompatible (idiots, but that's for another thread).

to enable at commands, you have to do some magic.  you have to power up with one pin (key) set the right way and that will put you into config mode.  or, I think you can press AND HOLD the key line and you should be in command mode.  there is a command mode that some call 'command-lite' where you get some commands but not all.

I use the hc05 and 06 and here's how I have a pair of them hooked up for wireless serial comms:

btw, I just checked and your module is BLE so it will pair with another BLE device that supports the same protocol, but you will get better results from the hc05 and it will be more compatible with BT classic (ie, most phones still speak bt classic and only te newer ones speak ble).

ble for serial i/o is actually stupid, but again, that's for another thread.

My phone (Sony Xperia Z3) is ble compatible, but it still cannot pair

you have to find out on YOUR module.  they are sometimes different.

again, I suggest the BT classic version and not BLE.  I'm not aware of the SPP (serial port protocol) being supported on BLE and things like blue-term won't run on BLE as far as I know.

just get the hc05 module.  its the more standard one.

BLE is a lot of marketing.  its not the right solution for serial transports.

I am not sure about the use case but BLE can be a good option, especially with SimpleBLE module, which offers a simple interface to BLE functionality.

I suspect that now, 6 years later, the issue has been resolved.
