Hi all,
I am looking for a good book on Transformer and coil design, I am more interested in books that focus on SMPS, I would also like it to give tips on winding these, for prototyping.
I have tried to design these in the past, and had so so results, but nothing really good. (my last design was more than likely parasitic capacitance from stripboard building)
This is really frustrating me, I would prefer to get this area better :) (I know when I do my BSEE I will learn this, but I want to learn now / next year, not way off)

Not many practical winding tips on those but something about transformer fill factor etc.

As mentioned you should visit magnetic core manufacturers sites. You can find lot of stuff there. www.mag-inc.com , www.metglas.com , www.micrometals.com etc.
You can`t find all you need in one book or one place.

I have a copy of a Babani book "Coil design and construction manual" B B Babani ISBN-13: 978-0859340502
"A handbook for the professional and home constructor on how to make R.F., I.F., audio and power coils, chokes and transformers. All types of coil are discussed and necessary calculations are given with the mathematical data simplified"
It may no longer be in print but you may find it on Alibris or in a library.
I could scan and email any relevant info if needed.
There are probably more recent books available that are relevant to switch mode design. There is this book

The blurb on transformer design is pretty weak, but it has examples of all of the main SMPS circuits.
Can't comment further on quality, I haven't but flipped through it yet. It had good reviews and it's cheap so I bought it and plan to read it when I have some time.

SMPS design is as much about the parasitics as it is about the actual circuit design. You're going to be very lucky to get a design working reliably without a proper PCB at any reasonable power level or switching frequency.
The values of di/dt and dv/dt throughout the circuit are extremely high, so any capacitive or inductive coupling within the circuit is going to play hell with your feedback and control signals.
Anyway, for something actually useful, Agilent has recently released some handheld LCR meters, the U1700 series, such as this one: http://www.home.agilent.com/agilent/product.jspx?nid=-34196.881632.00&cc=US&lc=eng
The lab I work for got some of these for field work and they're actually extremely accurate. Much more so than their price tag would suggest. A decent LCR meter can make inductor and transformer design much simpler.

I'm going to be reading for the next month!, this stuff should really help me on my quest to build a power supply (albeit not a SMPS one, but irregardless...great info)
