Books on Transformer and coil design
« on: December 29, 2009, 02:00:03 pm »
Hi all,

I am looking for a good book on Transformer and coil design, I am more interested in books that focus on SMPS, I would also like it to give tips on winding these, for prototyping.

I have tried to design these in the past, and had so so results, but nothing really good. (my last design was more than likely parasitic capacitance from stripboard building)

This is really frustrating me, I would prefer to get this area better :) (I know when I do my BSEE I will learn this, but I want to learn now / next year, not way off)

TIA

I have these two books on my bookshelf:

Switching Power Supply Design, Abraham I. Pressman et al.
Fundamentals of Power Electronics, R. W. Erickson et al.

Not many practical winding tips on those but something about transformer fill factor etc.

Regards,
Janne

SMPS as a whole: http://www.amazon.com/Switch-Mode-Power-Supplies-Christophe-Basso/dp/0071508589

And from a transformer manufacturer (choose ENGLISH in the upper right corner):

Beware of shipping costs when ordering from wedirekt.

Here are some generally about SMPS including inductor and transformer design

Maniktala, S.: Switching power supplies A to Z, Elsevier, SAD, 2006
Brown, M.: Practical switching power supply design, Academic press, SAD, 1990
     Already mentioned Abraham I. Pressman
ONSemiconductors - Linear & Switching Voltage Regulator Handbook - http://www.onsemi.com/pub_link/Collateral/HB206-D.PDF
ONSemi - SwitchmodeTM Power Supply Reference manual - http://www.onsemi.com/pub_link/Collateral/SMPSRM-D.PDF

Here are some about cores, inductors and transformers

Texas Instruments - Magnetic core characteristics - http://focus.ti.com/lit/ml/slup124/slup124.pdf
TI - Iductors and flyback transformer design - http://focus.ti.com/lit/ml/slup127/slup127.pdf
     TI - Power transformer design - http://focus.ti.com/lit/ml/slup126/slup126.pdf

As mentioned you should visit magnetic core manufacturers sites. You can find lot of stuff there. www.mag-inc.com , www.metglas.com , www.micrometals.com etc.

You can`t find all you need in one book or one place.

Thank you they are all great links I have saved them all, I'm after making some SMPS type circuits myself

Hi,
I have a copy of a Babani book "Coil design and construction manual" B B Babani ISBN-13: 978-0859340502
"A handbook for the professional and home constructor on how to make R.F., I.F., audio and power coils, chokes and transformers. All types of coil are discussed and necessary calculations are given with the mathematical data simplified"

It may no longer be in print but you may find it on Alibris or in a library.
I could scan and email any relevant info if needed.
There are probably more recent books available that are relevant to switch mode design. There is this book

Switch-Mode Power Supplies: SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs

By Christophe Basso,
McGraw-Hill Professional, 2008

It's mentioned here

I have Demystifying Switching Power Supplies, Raymond A. Mack

http://www.amazon.com/Demystifying-Switching-Power-Supplies-Technology/dp/0750674458/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267460381&sr=1-1

Click search inside and start at pg. 267, Transformer "practical construction considerations."  Look to Google if you want to poke around more.

http://books.google.com/books?id=s7vyoYZA0uwC&printsec=frontcover&dq=Demystifying+Switching+Power+Supplies&ei=hOqLS8_1A6OEywSAl5SvDg&client=firefox-a&cd=1#v=onepage&q=&f=false

The blurb on transformer design is pretty weak, but it has examples of all of the main SMPS circuits.

Can't comment further on quality, I haven't but flipped through it yet.  It had good reviews and it's cheap so I bought it and plan to read it when I have some time.

SMPS design is as much about the parasitics as it is about the actual circuit design. You're going to be very lucky to get a design working reliably without a proper PCB at any reasonable power level or switching frequency.

The values of di/dt and dv/dt throughout the circuit are extremely high, so any capacitive or inductive coupling within the circuit is going to play hell with your feedback and control signals.

Anyway, for something actually useful, Agilent has recently released some handheld LCR meters, the U1700 series, such as this one: http://www.home.agilent.com/agilent/product.jspx?nid=-34196.881632.00&cc=US&lc=eng

The lab I work for got some of these for field work and they're actually extremely accurate. Much more so than their price tag would suggest. A decent LCR meter can make inductor and transformer design much simpler.

Late response, (new here and reading all the materials from the beginning is a long process).

The folks at Power Integrations have great applications about smps transformers notes especially these one :

I am truly in awe at the wealth of information in this thread!  Awesome!

I'm going to be reading for the next month!, this stuff should really help me on my quest to build a power supply (albeit not a SMPS one, but irregardless...great info)
