Breadboard to Veroboard in no time.
« on: February 09, 2014, 08:54:09 am »
Hi,
You probably already know this but you might have some other or better
ideas as well.

One annoying thing is when you have a working circuit on a breadboard
and you need to transfer it to a veroboard for permanent soldering.
You might make mistakes in the new layout/wiring, and then spend a lot
of time debugging your otherwise perfectly working circuit. ..  ::)

Well, I've found an online store that sells various veroboards but it also sells
some in the same pinouts as most breadboards.  Its http://www.veroboard.com/
and here is a sample board.     Its the VeroBread...   :)

840 Point Breadboard Epoxy Fiber

The idea is that you line up the Verobread on top of your breadboard,
hold it in place with some pins at the four corners, build your test circuit
and when everything is working, you pull out the Verobread with all
components attached in the correct positions ready to be soldered.  :-+

Ok, I haven't tried it yet and I not aware of its limitations, but you get the idea.
Maybe the IC's might not have long enough pins to reach the breadboard,
but an IC socket might.  I will give it a go.

Has anybody tried that or a similar way?  Any experience with that company?
Does anybody know if there are other stores as well that sell similar boards ?

Thanks.

This looks pretty cool, it feels like this could be pretty useful for more complicated circuits with several ICS, I'm definitely getting some.

These types of perfboard analogs of a 830 or 840 tie point breadboard are very common and old news. For example from Dipmicro in Canada:

Dipmicro http://www.dipmicro.com/store/PCB-PB4B which has some smd component mounting features the vero board above lacks.

dipmicro has other sizes and styles as well. I'm sure you can find similar on ebay.

Radio-Shack used to sell a veroboard that matched their breadboard.
This is from the 1980 catalog...

I've used this one from BusBoard Prototype Systems. I got it at my local electronics store.

Adafruit sells a variety of similar boards.

Radio Shack from 1980!  Not bad.  What happened?
Do they still sell them?

Most of the Adafruit boards have no interconnected strips.
I have some and they are of a very good quality though.

I've just bought some from veroboard.com to try them out.

What do you mean? They're connected the same way as a solderless breadboard, so you can transfer a circuit directly from a breadboard. Isn't that what you were talking about in your first post?

In a normal breadboard for example, points A12, B12, C12, D12 and E12 are shorted.
In the board you've posted, they are not.  You will have to solder them together.

They are connected. That's the whole point, those boards mimic a solderless breadboard. Read the product description and look at the pictures:

http://proto-pic.co.uk/adafruit-perma-proto-full-sized-breadboard-pcb-3-pack/

The smaller version doesn't have a picture of the back, this one shows that it does exactly connected as the protoboard and I assume that the small version is the same.  :)

I've just received the boards from veroboard.com.
Not impressed...

One of the three came with some form of corrosion and they generally feel cheap.
At least they don't smell.

PCB

I also have a small one from Adafruit and the difference in quality is huge!
Adafruit A+++++

The original idea though works perfectly!  I aligned the board on top of another breadboard
and hold it in place at the four corners.  Works great!
