can i run a 13.8v cb/ham Transceiver on 12v
« on: April 18, 2015, 02:31:26 am »
hi everyone!
i was wondering if you could run a 13.8v ham/cb transceiver on 12v. i know it would still work but i was wondering if it would draw to much current on 12v and damage the transceiver and if it would affect performance. sorry if this question sounded stupid but i am only just getting into ham/cb radio.
thanks everyone! :-+

make and model, what does the manual say.(should be ok I guess). after all 13.8 is the alternator charging voltage of a 12v battery.

+- (plus or minus) 15% but i was wondering if it will decrease performance
thanks :-+

na, will be fine.
It will have been designed for 13.8V because that's the float charge voltage of a 12V lead acid battery

Therefor we can assume it will be fine with a flat 12v lead acid. ~10.5 - 13.8V will be the intended voltage range.

In general a lower voltage doesn't damage things.
An exception is badly built switchmode power supplies that don't auto cut-off at low V and instead try to run with way to much current flowing through the components

Think about it this way, you don't have to have the car running to use the cb radio.
