Can you help me identify?
« on: April 08, 2015, 12:32:59 am »
I have this capacitor? I can't seem to find a replacement. I've googled and and get different values depending on the page.. I've gotten 0.14uF and 0.01uF?

Thanks, Walter

If you mean biggest one, it is 0.18uF 630V

You go to mouser, select "passives", then "capacitors" and put the values into the search mask".

You've already been told the value, but for completeness:
184 J 630V
has three parts which are in order:
1. Value in pF with 3rd digit as the multiplier = 180000pF = 0.18uF
2. Letter for the tolerance (J) = +/-5%
3. Max Voltage (not coded) = 630V

http://www.radio-electronics.com/info/data/capacitor/capacitor-markings.php may help in future.

It's actually pretty standard for smaller capacitors.

The value is also often just two digits long, in which case it's just the value in pF, unless it's a polarised capacitor, in which case it'll  be in µF. You may also see things like 4p7, in which case the p replaces the decimal point so it's 4.7pF.

Sorry, I was thinking "in general", but I realize its all different. I'll look up the specifics on certain compacitors.

There's a few more oddball capacitor codes you may bump into in old or vintage equipment. http://www.radiomuseum.org/forum/for_beginners_prefixes_and_codes.html
