CD player went bananas
« on: August 19, 2013, 06:43:54 pm »
I have an old Denon CDP, was just curious about the clock frequency, sampling rate and how it works.. so I started probing around. When I touched one of the caps on the crystal side to check for the clock frequency, the platter stopped and the motor started to spin backwards like one million rpms . What the heck? I used my Rigol 1052 scope on both 1x and 10x probe settings, I could see some changes in signal when I put the probe 10x.
How could that possibly happen that I totally confused the CDP just by probing it? Any idea?

the capacitance either side of the crystal will likely only be 7-30pF, so loading it up with a x10 probe at another 30 odd pF is going to interrupt or possibly stop the oscillation,
