Cheapo ebay ESR meters
« on: October 20, 2014, 07:59:06 am »
Hello folks.

I'm in need of esr meter so been snooping around ebay and found there are plenty of those caseless esr meters.
Are they any good ? I have watched some videos that pit them against "proper" esr meters and they did well.
However in none of the videos i watched they've been tested in circuit.

So my questions are:
1. Are they worth it ? (10-20 quid) Can something better be had for this kind of money ? (Dont think so, but one can hope, right ? :D)
2. Will they work in circuit ?
3. Can they do big caps ? (Amp filters and such)

Normally you can't measure a capacitor in circuit (unreliable measurements), BTW all these cheap meters are a copy of the avr transistortester, there is an interesting thread about it:

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/$20-lcr-esr-transistor-checker-project/

And yes, for 20$ these toys are worthy, but make sure the caps are discharged before measuring something, this design has no input protection..

Cheers.
