Choosing scope Siglent 1000-x-e or Instek GDS-2104
« on: June 24, 2018, 05:59:40 pm »
I'm looking to buy my first scope (changed job, no longer access to a decent lab :( )

Easy (?) question: I can get a used Instek GDS-2104 for about the same price as a new Siglent SDS1104X-E.

Does the quality of the instek win out over newer, guarantee covered (and calibrated?) Siglent?

Typically doing lowish frequency arm-m0 and AVR stuff. Protocol decoder on the Siglents seems tempting, as the micro rarely lives by it self.

You mean old GDS-2104 without any suffix, not GDS-2104E? If that's the case, no way you should pay this much for a completely obsolete scope. I would not pay even EUR 150 for it.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I would assume the seller added the E suffix if it had one.

That's a problem with the low cost brands. They obsolete the models so darn fast  |O

Thanks for weighting in.

Fast? That model is like 12-15 years old. The latest firmware version for it was released in 2010.

I just did a similar analysis against other options and the best bang for the buck for me at the 500usd price point was the sds1104x-e. And now with the bandwidth hack it really became an easy choice. I may add the AWG later and the MSO options later.  for me it was more of an upgrade to reduce my bench footprint and add capabilities.  I just got mine this past Friday.

Hobbyist and a retired engineer and possibly a test equipment addict, though, searching for the equipment to test for that.

I had some siglent model I can't remember in mind.. though, it might be that I need a history lesson instead ;)

What bandwidth hack is that? Google refuses to tell me about any hacks for sds1104x-e  |O
