COG LCD without a connector.
« on: July 27, 2014, 08:23:16 pm »
Hi everyone,

So I wasn't sure if I should post here or on the micro-controller section (as I will most likely be using this with an arduino), but here it is. (Please do tell me if it shouldn't be here)

I got a goodie bag or a lucky bag, with displays in it. An assortment as a matter of fact. It was only £3, so I thought I can't go wrong. I'm sort of trying to know the products the shop I work at sells. In the bag there was about 10 different displays. I liked the 4 different size 7 segment displays that were included. But what caught my attention was the big 2" screen. The thing with these bags is that often the screens come with no connectors. This one is off some big industrial machine called 'Danfoss FC302'. I'm looking for the connector for it, that I'd be able to solder some pins on and put it on a bread board. The screen is apparently a 128x64 (this I figured from research on similar displays, but I may be wrong). There are 20 pins on the connector 'port', and some plastic bits so the thing can be backlit with a couple of LEDs. These are the markings on the back of the screen:

WQ4670A-01
TM12880CCCWUGNA-B-2B

it almost looks if this needs to mate with a single ended compression connector. samtec makes those. (others do as well )

you are essentially looking for a connector that solders in on one end and has spring loaded contacts on the other end.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Well, I thought that it should be a spring loaded 'plug'... But since I'm a bit of a noob, I wasn't even sure what to search for, but thanks for the tip :) I'll look into it :D

Or something like this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elastomeric_connector

You see, the elastomeric ones are a little different. I did get some screens in that bag that required some of those, but they seem to have totally different connectors.

Those are only usable for bare LCDs, not containing any electronics.

That's quite right.

The connector is the least of your worries when you're trying to use an unknown display...

From the part number it appears to be a 128x80 made by Tianma. You could try asking them for information, especially for the pinout and controller (might be Solomon SSD1821). It looks more like TAB than COG to me.

many LCDs are implemented by connecting a cased1 LCD driver IC with the
physical display via a Printed-Circuit Board (PCB) (see Figure 1a). This concept - referred
to in the following as the Surface Mount Device, or SMD concept - provides a robust
mechanical solution but requires a more complex and more area intense PCB design.

Unless you are extraordinarily lucky, you will spend far more time and $$$ looking for a connector for that than you paid for it (or that it is worth).
If it were me, I would simply solder wires directly to those pads and get on with my life.
Amyk is correct that connecting to that unit is the least of your problems.

I see. So is there any other display with a similar size and preferably same resolution that you guys know of, and could recommend?

There are several popular sources of LCD displays, both character and/or graphics.  What physical size and pixel resolution are you seeking?
For example, Sparkfun and Adafruit both sell several different sizes of LCD displays.

I did look at both adafruit and sparkfun, but nothing caught my eye as much as this little guy in that baggie. I'm generally looking for something about 2ish inches across, that would maybe look like a gameboy pocket screen (with a backlight). Also, does anyone know of any good tutorials on how to program and design graphics for such screens? :/

If you really love that display so much, then you will have to commit the time to either getting a proper data sheet for it, or else reverse-engineering the "black box"  and working out which pins do what.  You may not realize the amount of work ahead of you. You may decide that the benefit isn't worth the considerable effort.

And then, after you figure out the pin-out and the multiplexing scheme, you have the task of figuring out the AC matrix driving algorithm.  This is why LCD displays that INCLUDE the drivers are so popular with people using micro-controllers like Arduino, et.al.  The data sheets and application notes from the manufacturers are the primary source of information and education about driving these displays.  Even if you can't get the data sheet for THAT display, you can look at the data sheets and application notes of similar displays to see how it is done.

Good luck.
