Convert 12VDC to 300VDC
« on: January 26, 2012, 05:42:29 pm »
Hi!

I have some 300V capacitors that i need to charge up for my coilgun project. I've used a board from a disposable camera to charge the capacitors, but it doesn't quite give the kick... The capacitor bank is on 10mF, and you could imagine how long it takes to charge them up to 300V.

Since it's a coilgun i want the charger to be a bit mobile, that's why it would be nice to convert the voltage from a 12V power supply (like a 12V battery).

(The capacitors are rated to 330V)

Any ideas?  :)

Use a UPS. Rectify the output and charge the caps.

Do you mean 10,000 uF?

Let's see: 0.5 x 0.01 x 300^2 = 450 J

I assume you don't need great regulation.  A simple unregulated push-pull SMPS should work OK for this application.  You can find a basic schematic about halfway down this page:

You will have to wind your own transformer, and do a bit of calculations to get things right, but it should work OK.
