control differences between Atmel 25DF041A and 25LC256

hello,
i'm studying the really good book Exploring Pic 32, where he explains how to talk with 25LC256 spi eeprom memory
i'm using the SURE Pic32 demo board wich has a Atmel 25DF041A spi FLASH

looking both datasheets seems they have the same pinout and the same control commands...
i'm trying a simple program writing and asking the status register but i always get 255 for value

do you know if i can use them in the same or need i change something?

First thing to check is that the peripherals and IO pins are configured correctly, then that your code operates the chip select line correctly.
