Desoldering Bulb?
« on: August 27, 2016, 02:53:32 am »
I bought this little desoldering bulb from Canadian tire: http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/weller-de-soldering-bulb-0580006p.html

but, the hole is very tiny, compared to the pumps, should I drill a bigger hole? Also, how do I empty these things? I cant seem to get the tip off.

Those bulbs are useless. They suck far too slowly. You need a spring operated piston pump. Even some of those can be pretty hopeless, but a GOOD piston pump is an excellent cheap and compact desoldering tool.

I found the bulb type had fairly low suction. I prefer the piston type like these.
http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=TU-135C&_sacat=0

I can't find one exactly like the one I have but it is quite old now and not from ebay.

I like the smaller ones because you can charge the piston with the thumb for one handed operation. The bigger ones are more powerful but require two hands or flipping it over to press on the bench or some other fixed surface.

no, you need THIS one:
http://www.dx.com/p/lihuada-lhd-101-light-weight-handheld-tin-sucker-remover-desoldering-pump-black-green-406024

it's big and pull's a lot of air, but you can use it one-handed with your thumb.  :-+
(it's also cheaper than the bulb!  :palm: )

I'll second stj, I have one very similar and it does work well.

I can't really believe that is sold as a desoldering tool.   :palm: Reminds me of the little air pump very similar I use to bowl off my sensor on my dslr.
Gone for good

How does something from a reputable brand like weller get out classed by some chinese made "crap"?

To its credit, it did work pretty well on some joints, not so much on the smaller joints.

You pick NOW to tell me.

Who else didn't know there was a better way?
If you are an EE for a living it can be hard to notice the things that might not be obvious to someone who hasn't picked up this kind of trick my working with others. :-\

In a wiring shop most of the desoldering pumps are indeed fitted with a silicone sleeve over the nozzle.

Definitely use the silicone sleeve. It confirms to the joint/iron tip much better, giving better suction. If you have a hobby shop near, just stop in and grab some silicone fuel tubing for gas powered R/C model engines. A pack of this tubing is cheap and will give you enough to last forever.

The same way as chinese temperature controlled soldering station can outperform weller firestick.

In my opinion, the best desoldering handtool is still the original EDSYN SOLDAPULLT III PT409 or DS017LS.

http://www.edsyn.com/category/DHT.html

There are crap chineses copies of DS17, but nothing to do with the original EDSYN one.

+1

As somebody who used to replace the pump every 2 weeks because the one sold on ebay for 2$ are a piece of shit,  I can safely say that the best pump is o.k industries or edsyn.

In 1973, I have buyed 2 PT109 EDSYN and I used them up to recently.
I only had to change the tip from time to time.
As they are now well worn and one of them has a broken spring, I recently buyed two new ones.
I don't know if it is EDSYN, HAKKO ou other who own the patent of this desoldering handtools, but at least EDSYN PT109 exist for a very long time ago. (well before 1973 !)

I needed to replace the o-rings, they where not making a tight seal so the pump barely sucked anything.

You must lubricate the O-ring from time to time.
