DICK SMITH T2000 SOLDERING STATION.
« on: March 04, 2017, 04:12:36 am »
Hello all.
It's been a couple of months since my last post.
hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year.
Mine was Great apart from a fuel pump failure on a highway which left my family stranded on a highway for 6 hours in 42 Deg C temperature, waiting for NRMA road service.

My first question for 2017.
I have an old dick Smith soldering station T2000 bought around 1980.
The element fell apart when I went to change the tip.
I replaced the station but would like to have a backup unit.
A replacement element is around $30 from     ozdailydeal365 (10108)
I was watching Big Clive the other day and he had on his show some HAKKO HAND PIECE CLONES for less than $5.00 AU.
and control board for about the same.

I think he said they are K type thermo-couple controlled.
I'll have to find the video and watch it again

Has anyone got any idea if the T2000 is thermo-couple or thermistor control.
The PCB has both sense wires close together. About 6mm apart with a single letter between them. "S"
I think this would be for a  Thermistor as Thermo-couple would be labelled "S+" and "S-" as it is inside my replacement station.
There are 5 preset pots plus the temperature adjust pot on the PCB.
could get a bit messy.

I might go the Big Clive way and replace the controller, hand piece and case.
I work in sheet metal so I could knock one up in my spare time.

Any Ideas

from
BILL.

P.S.
WOULD ANYONE HAVE THE SCHEMATIC OF THIS STATION.
I HAD ONE ONCE BUT HAVE MISPLACED IT.

omg Dick Smith electronics.
they had some of thosestores  in the usa in california in the 80's... i bought my first rechargeable AA nicad batches there...
didn't seem to last in the uaa though, think they closed up shop in the usa before the end of that decade. Brings back memories though.
Hobbyist and a retired engineer and possibly a test equipment addict, though, searching for the equipment to test for that.

Thank you Wilfred for the circuits
the user guide is the same as the one I got with the station.
As I said Ii have misplaced it but the guide looks the same.
the other one showed the hand piece as a plug in replaceable tool.
the schematics shows the 4 preset pots so I may be able to make a retrofit.
The case even has a hole in it to take the 4/5 pin din type connector.
I might go with this after all.

once again
 Thank you
for your help.

Wilfred..  thanks for your help once again.
Where did you find the schematics for the t-2000.
The two schematics you posted appear to be the same, just drawn about face from the 2nd op-amp to the right
The power rails are swapped and components moved about and some rotated, but the circuits seem to be the same.

One shows the iron connected with a plug and socket.
The PCB layout is completely different.

On the PCB there are 5 trim pots. 3 flat to the board and 2 upright.
I will try to trace the circuit but there a lot of wires on the board and make it hard to keep flipping the board over.

see attachments.
I will give it as go anyway, maybe I could use the pictures to help..

Thanks for your help.
BILL
