does output current changes if capacitor is added

does output current changes if capacitor is added in the circuit

I used the multimeter with no load to check the current and got a reading of around 8amps from my power supply

But after adding capacitor and connecting it to a load i was roughly getting 1amps

Did you short the power supply with your multimeter set to amps? Maybe that's why you got 8 amps. But normally if you connect a cap on the output it should store more energy and discharge it later when needed.
Don't mess with an Electronics Engineer, it Megahertz!

i agree, something seems terribly wrong
Hobbyist and a retired engineer and possibly a test equipment addict, though, searching for the equipment to test for that.

My initial reaction was that you have shorted the output of the supply with your meter on the Amps range, then added a load which only draws about an amp.

Please check how you are using your meter!

If you have done what I think you have done, making the same mistake on high energy circuits - such as mains - could cause your meter to explode.

Using the current ranges on a meter requires more care and understanding than any other.

Show us your load circuit.
For all we know, your load has a high frequency ripple in it which you meter may be responding to.  The cap may filter out this ripple and be giving you the true reading.

An example load would be a simple high current PWM led dimming circuit which doesn't have enough input filtering.
