Encoder
« on: January 04, 2014, 01:24:48 am »
What type of encoder is good for Arduino UNO ? I am guessing that it really doesn't matter if I use optical or mechanical type, depends on how I will wire it to the board.? I am rather looking for reliable type of small encoder, and since I have no experience with encoders whatsoever I would like if you can guys give me some insight.

an optical is worth it (digikey has them for $9) as it requires no debouncing, and leaves you to spend your time improving your project rather than tweaking resistance values and implementing a state machine to prevent the first turn in one direction being interpreted in the opposite

an RC filter on the 2 grey code pins can also debounce, if you don't mind the extra parts.

I bought some of these a while ago:

I have not tested them yet. However, it might give you some clues about what to look for. It took me ages to find any due to low google fu at the time.

As mentioned earlier, searching your favourite component supplier will yield a lot of results. Useful if you have specific requirements. You also have the advantage of proper datasheets then too.
