Fluke 89-IV vs 87-V.

Data logging feature of the 89-IV aside. Which is the better meter? I have an offer to buy either one used for about the same price.

89-IV is the better meter. Dual display, better accuracy and precision, data logging, ...

I have several 189's and a couple 87-V. I use my 189's way more often. Either is a great meter.

Depends what your requirements are and how you intend to use it.  There are pros and cons to each.

BTW, check the 89IV for the slow settle problem as discussed below.

The 87V defaults to AC when you switch it to amps so if you work mostly on DC circuits this can be a bit of a nuisance.

And the auto-off is pretty good at predicting when I want to take the next measurement and switches the meter off just before that.

But this is just nitpicking, the 87V is a great meter.

Defaulting to AC is a deal breaker for me.  I find myself reaching for other brands of meters in my collection due to this stupid feature (or lack of).  My V collects dust most of the time.

The 89 IV is something of a battery hog compared to the 87V, yes?

Yeah, a bit. But it uses AAA vs 9V in the 87V.

I would go with 87V just because it's the most used one in electronics , and unless it's the older version with gsm problem it's pretty much indestructible.

I ended up getting the 89 IV new in the box. This meter is firmware 1.01 but does not seem to have the settling problems shown by some users. Thanks for all the help.
