General advice on scale project
« on: January 09, 2015, 03:43:39 am »
Greetings!

I'm an electronics beginner and am looking for some general advice on how to go about a project.

I am looking to hack a digital food scale. I want the scale to take a measurement every hour and to send this data to a user's profile on a web application.

I do some web development and can build the web applications with Rails. I am not sure how to construct the digital scale hack and have it send the data over WiFi.

Here are 2 articles that I found which would be very similar. They use a body weight scale and send the data to a Google document. This seems very similar to what I am trying to accomplish.

http://gadgetmakersblog.com/hacking-kitchen-scale/

I am wondering if this would be feasible given my skill level? Is what I am trying to build too complicated for a beginner, even with these step by step tutorials and guidance from forums etc?

In general how difficult would this project be for someone with the experience?

Just a note, I have a lot of time to spend on this.

Thanks!

Perhaps you could get a USB postal scale and connect it to a laptop.  You would have to find one that doesn't need to be turned on manually.

Hey there. I would need it to be wireless. Do you think it's possible to hack a common digital food scale?
I found a few more articles that are similar to what I am trying to do.

Isn't a laptop wireless?
