Happy KABBOUMM your power supply exploded Christmas
« on: December 24, 2015, 08:30:42 pm »
After a nice Xmas family meal, went to do some measurements, as you do.

Took out the 12V, 1Amp wall wart.
For once I plugged in the supply before connecting the test board. KABOUM!  :scared:
Nice puff of magic smoke.  :wtf:
The plastic tabs had given way and it was only held together by a self taper.
Opened up, and it seem one of the rectifying diodes had shorted a heat sink, that in turn blew up an IC and some part that says 250V, 1.6A in top...

I think it had been arcing since I first plugged it in this week and just could not take it any more...

Not removing the heatsink nor unwelding parts to check further, this is going back to the shop ASAP.

Uh slightly better than the power supply I found being used to power a pair of scales at work. I was given it to fix and found that is had no PCB, just 4 diodes and a capcitor soldered in mid air.  :palm:

The BOM must have made management happy lucky wonderful long life.

It's crap, but the output clean up real nice. Using it as a standardised part I can swtich out in case of failure.
Seems they omited a pair of coils on the output side.

In any case, the ones I'll be using for the project will get opened, checked, insulated and hot snooted.

Well aparently that's a myth and it's a genuine misprint because they wanted to blatantly lie all along about the CE marking. I can't remember if it was CE marked, at the end of the day not much wrong with what they did but goes to show how shoddy the chinese will be.
