HC05 Bluetooth and iPhone
« on: August 28, 2014, 12:21:25 pm »
Hi All

I've seen a lot a Bluetooth serial modules hooked up to Android devices, but none to iPhones.

I just cannot get my iPhone to detect my HC05 module in Slave / Master mode and I was wondering if anyone:

1.  Has done this and can share the magic or
2.  Has apple screwed me and they don' allow this kind of thing?

Thanks

Simon

ios does not support most bluetooth profiles[1], because apple wants a slice of peripheral profits through its MFi program[2]. If you can't dump ios, you will have to use BLE (which is unrestricted and not part of MFi).

If you are developing your own application for this task, you can check out "Core Bluetooth Temperature Sensor" example. But, as was already stated in previous comment, you better switch to Bluetooth LE capable module.

I believe you also need at least Iphone 4S to work. It won't work with Iphone 4 or less.

You can get the HM-10 module which is very similar to the HC05 and talks Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) with the iPhone (4S or later), iPad 3 or later, iPod 5th gen, most Android 4.3 phones and latest tablets, Windows Phone 8.1 and Blackberry 10...

Just pick up a Spark Core and do it via the internet? The range on those BT modules is going to be too small to work as a garage door opener.

Raspberry Pi, wifi dongle, GPIO and web page.

All stuff in my junk box.

Overkill to use an RPi for this, but Meh.

I walk home from the train and periodically forget my house keys. Happy for the range to be 'right next to the door'.

Eh, RPIs are in the disposable price range these days. (Within $5 of a Spark Core.) So that should work just fine! :)

I'm successfully using these ones from ST with Android and the datasheet explains how to extend them for iOS compatibility:

SPBT2632C2A (old one, recently marked NRND)

SPBT3.0DP2 (drop-in replacement)
