How to test a MOSFET

How would i test a MOSFET with a digital multi meter?  I have data sheets and i know where the drain source and gate are, But how do i test them?

One way that works for some is to short the gate to the drain and check for resistance to the source.  Then short the gate to the source and check resistance to the drain.  It should be open one way and closed the other.
