Microsoft replaces HyperTerminal with Telnet Client in Windows 7/8.  But, it's not installed by default.  Go here to for the installation procedure.

Unfortunately Telnet Cliebt is no help when you need to talk to a device sitting on a local COM port.  You would also need a Telnet server that acts as a COM port bridge.

Hello, I am looking for a HyperTerminal like program. As we all know Microsoft decided that it was not necessary in the new version of windows.

So I am looking for a free basic program to communicate via serial. Does anyone know of a good one?

Not free, and also for the Mac (and Mac only), is Serial. Absolutely worth the thirty bucks. Among its features is that it can talk to every USB-to-RS232 dongle I've thrown at it, even those which have no native Mac drivers and aren't supported on newish versions of Windows.

Putty is ok if the data is actual ASCII. For actual binary data I've used realterm (it is quite confusing in my opinion, hard to understand what it is doing) but I don't really like it. I should probably check out some of the solutions mentioned in this topic.

Having dealt with some serial data in some of my own software using Qt and QSerialPort I've seriously contemplated on making my own serial terminal software for binary data, having not found any good solutions...
