I want to buy an osciloscope
« on: October 27, 2015, 12:11:25 pm »

Hello everyone, I would like to buy the Rigol 1054z osciloscope. Does anyone know if this is still best bang for buck or should I look into something else, maybe wait for some impending new model that is about to hit the market?

Also, is there any shop in Europe that offers discounts for EEVblog forum members?

Oh, that's easy to answer: yes, repeat, no.

First define what you want to use the scope for.

Then do research on this forum and elsewhere.

Thereafter you will be able to ask a question that can be answered - preferably a question that has not already been answered elsewhere.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

Absolutely best bang for buck! I got one a few months ago and I still can't believe how much scope I get for half a grand.

You should figure out first what you are needing it for and what use...

Personally i still use my secondhand old analog scope. Seems so far do everything i have needed it to... But there are things you definitely want digital one...
Electronics, Linux, Programming, Science... im interested all of it...

I will just play on some  microcontroller dev. boards. Some small analog and power circuits, general stuff. Nothing that would require anything in particular. It seems to be adequate for what I need.
I am asking just if there have appeared other scopes that might be worth a look, or might appear soon. No point on spendig money on it if I could get better in the same price range.

If all you want to do is look at low-level audio signals then you can get sufficient bang for far fewer bucks. And then spend the other bucks on something else.

If you are thinking of the 1054z and are happy with that price level then as most posts say, its probably the best buy at the moment.

( cannot blame you for asking the question here , I would like to see an up to date resume of the 1054 rather than trying to wade though the 1800+ posts on the 1054z thread in the Test Equipment forum)

Make sure you buy from a genuine EU Rigol dealer, so the warranty is upheld in the same country; many, but not all,  Ebay sellers, though shipping from  your EU country, the warranty is return to China, the actual location of the seller/supplier.

Also consider its longer term value, even Rigols old 1052 model is still demanding a high price on the second hand market, so the 1054z is probably a better  investment than some cheaper devices.

My question is, is it still hack-upgradable to 100Mhz?  I was thinking of getting one of these as a second scope if it is.  Anyone hack one recently?

For that price bracket yes the DS1054Z it is the best bang for the buck. However, I think the absolute best bang for your buck right now is the Rigol MSO4014, for $2594 this gives you a 500 MHz 4GSa/s 4 analog channel + 16 digital channel mixed signal scope. The equivalent scope from Keysight would cost you $12,700, so in my opinion the $2,594 for the Rigol offers the greatest value for the money.
