Infrared vs Hot Air for Rework Stations
« on: January 03, 2012, 07:01:48 pm »
It seems as if the higher end rework stations all use infrared instead of hot air.  What are the advantages/disadvantages of using infrared instead of hot air? I assume one advantage is that infrared can be focused more tightly.  Anything else?

Not blowing small parts away appears to be a convenient advantage.

Infrared doesn't work too well on shiny things.

It's more difficult to get accurate temperature with infrared.

I would agree, however I've never had any problems with parts blowing away or shifting while using a heat gun.
