is it possible to control the MC34063 digitally with out losing efficiency?

You can use a digital pot in the sense divider feedback. Or inject current into the divider using a dac and an opamp.

If you have any kind of digital control, you can literally do better by using it directly as PWM.

MC34063 sucks that much.
