KiCad Issues - Routing tracks to footprints
« on: November 01, 2017, 11:10:53 pm »
I am trying to make my own PCB for the first time, Just having issues routing tracks to footprints. This is my first time using KiCad so I am really green.

Any tips? Or do you know what I'm doing wrong? Any good tutorial vids?

Thanks EEVFourm.

Did you look for tutorial videos? There are a lot of them out there and not quite hard to find.

Search for contextual electronics getting to blinky.

Search for contextual electronics getting to blinky.
That's the one that will also inevitably pop up when you do look for tutorials.

as other have mentioned, "getting to blinky" https://youtu.be/JN_Y93RTdSo?list=PLy2022BX6Eso532xqrUxDT1u2p4VVsg-q

In short what you are doing wrong is that you didn't start with a schematic defining what is connected to what

Note that KiCad can be peculiar in some areas, so be sure to pay close attention to the more specific instructions or rewatch the video if you don't get it to work the first time.

Hi Kilroywashere,

Looks like you haven't created a schematic yet? As there is no rats nest in the PCB editor screenshot.

From inside EEschema - (these are buttons along the top of EESchema)
1. Create Schematic - so it knows how the components are linked togeather
2. Annotate schematic - Assign component numbers like R1, R2 etc
3. Run CvPCB to associate footprints with schematic components - Choose the physical shape of the components
4. Generate Netlist - Exports all of the info in a format for PCBNew

5. From PCBNew import/read the netlist - now you should have all the components and a rats nest ready for you to position and draw tracks between them.

I think I have all of that correct, yes watch Blinky it will help.

Cheers,
Carl
