Thanks guys for all the advice.
I decided to go for the Vichy VC99. Seems like it would satisfy my current needs and is quite safe (in my opinion), relative to the other cheapies.

But I promise - my next multimeter will be a Fluke!  :D

I couldn't get an Amprobe for even twice the price of the Vichy.

But if it does break... well, that would be a good 33$ lesson for me! :)

oh well, you have been warned, I suggest you wrap it in foam  ;) a 60cm drop was enough to stop the ohms from working. It seems to have come back. Now and then it won't turn on and I have to turn it on and off a few times to get it to start. The only pro for that meter os that it will do 20A that many others don't do

My first multimeter was a Soar model ME-540 (made in Japan) that my dad gave during my college years (1986 - 1991), it is now defective. My second multimeter (which I bought sometime 2001) is a Fluke model 179, after almost 10 years I have no plan of replacing it as my main meter.   8)
