max038 chip
« on: December 28, 2013, 07:50:07 am »
Where can I get my hand on a Max038 or a similar chip?
The only place I could find it was china through eBay...quite frankly, I'm not sure I want to buy such a chip from china..

There are no reliable sources for them any more. Maxim stopped producing them some time ago. The story was somewhat along the line that the fab burned down and it wasn't economically viable to rebuild.

It is long since obsolete. Maxim don't have the required fab capability to produce it any more.

The daddy of the MAX038 was the ICL8038, it's possible there are more of these 'laying' around than the MAX038.

The modern way to do it would be a direct digital synthesis (DDS) chip from the likes of Analog Devices. There are some cheap DDS boards on eBay that some people on this forum seem reasonably happy with.

I've ordered it twice from different chinese sellers over Ebay. First was fake, the second didn't arrive. Recently a colleague ordered  it from UK and it works fine. I'm going to order one from the same seller when he reopens the store after holidays.

As I recall Maxim stopped producing this chip in 2006. Judging by the date code the one from UK is probably original. Some chinese chips are marked 09XX, 11XX and 12XX which is highly suspicious.
