Measuring Electrolytic Caps
« on: January 30, 2014, 06:07:25 am »
Iv got a relatively new Extech  330 multimeter (got it 3 months ago) but It just wont measure electrolytic above 47uF  :-//

The datasheet says the range is 0.001nF to 200?F so guess its faulty or I'm doing something very stupid!

Any troubleshooting suggestions?

that ? is because there blog software doesn't recognize the micro symbol, so its upper range is 200uF,

as for why it cannot handle above 47uF, it could be esr or a leakage current making it think its higher,

How long are you giving it to perform the measurement.  Measurement can take quite a while as caps get bigger.

I'm leaving it a good whiles 20+ seconds (using both clips and probes) but it will just show 0.000uF or sometimes around 20nF on brand new 47+uf caps, and have even tried shorting out the caps beforehand.....think its time to return the bloody thing!
