Minor complaint about forum software.
« on: April 16, 2014, 12:52:55 am »

I am not trying to be a jerk, and I am probably a newbie idiot, but here goes.

I use many different forums on the net for technical things.  Each has the ability
to 'see my own posts', which I use to see if answers have been given.

This one has 'see new replies since last visited', which was useful when I last
visited, but it was not useful AT ALL when I came back again to answer the reply I got
last time.

I put my username into the search, but it wouldn't search until I put some text into the box, which is ridiculous, and then it came up with my original post, but it did NOT
show me the reply I needed to answer.  Perhaps I am missing the link or just suffering from
abject newbie stupidity...

I found this very frustrating.  I had to remember a key word in my subject line, and
that took me to my post.  If I had wanted to peruse and answer posts that were older,
I shudder to think what the procedure might be, first to find them, then to search again
with data from the subject so I get the replies so I can continue the communication.

Sorry, this is an excellent forum, and I trust I am being a total idiot, missing the link
to find and reply to my own posts, any old post, but I get the sense that this forum software
is never used by the guys who wrote it, or they would understand this and made it work transparently
like all the other forums on the net :)

Ok, ducking out of here...  I did get my question answered, so I WILL be back :)

I believe "Show new replies to your posts" will not clear a notification until you view the thread, regardless if you log out or log in on another machine. If you viewed the thread but didn't reply, well, I'd put that on you to remember at that point.

You can also subscribe to threads, which will send you e-mail if there are posts you haven't viewed yet. If you're asking questions this is probably a good idea.

There is a "show new replies to your posts"  link at the top left.

I go to Profile / Summary / Show Posts and it shows only post I have started.
It's not the easiest but it works.

Up at the top it says:

Hello homerwsmith
Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.

Is the second not what you're looking for, or did I misunderstand? This will show any threads you posted in that have new replies.

I wish there was a way to subscribe to a thread and have it show up under "Show new replies to your posts".  I don't like getting emailed every time I visit the thread nor adding a useless "subscribed" post to the thread.

I totally agree with what @homerwsmith wrote,
other forums have 'view your posts', e.g, for mikrotik  http://forum.mikrotik.com/search.php?search_id=egosearch
Usually I enter forum with this 'egosearch' link.

the keyword search_id=egosearch shows on other forums with same functionality

The "egosearch" result list is ordered by recent updated on top, my unanswered topics are marked visually and visual mark disappears once I visit the topic. This gives excellent overview of which topcis I participate.

Click on Profile on the menu bar  (home > help > search > profile )

Move mouse over "Profile Info" and a menu will show up.

Move mouse over "Show posts..."

Select  Messages to see your posts, select  "Topics" to see your threads.

Right click on one of those and select "Copy Link Location" and make a bookmark.

That is not it,
it only shows topics I created and dont show topics I did not create and I wrote a message into.
And list view is rather detailed, the "egosearch" list topics title listed with ability to jump 1st, last message in the topic.

If you select Messages (the default behaviour) it does show the topics you contributed as well as the ones you started.
If you select Topics, then it shows only the ones you started.
And if you select Attachments (I haven't tried that one yet) It probably shows the attachments you added.

Messages -  no good either, a clogged view, too much info
Say I wrote 10 messages in the topic, Messages will show 10 lines, I would like to see single topic for my 10 messages in the topic, Like threaded view in gmail.
