Motor newbie looking for info
« on: November 21, 2016, 12:04:21 pm »
I've got a little motor at a flea market almost for free but I have no clue how I should wire it up.

In fact this is the first time I'm messing with a motor of any kind.
I've watched some videos about electric motors but I've yet to figure out in what category mine falls into.

I'd really like to learn more about electric motors in general and maybe acquire a few to play with ;so any general recommendations for reading/watching material about them would be nice..

I've attached pictures of the motor in question.
I don't even know if it's AC or DC let alone what I could do with it..
I'd certainly like to power it up though and see if it does anything ;D

Resistance between black and red is 159.4ohm and between green and white : 412.1 ohm

its says air  = aircraft? avionics dual frequency alternator
maybe a Flux switching alternator
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flux_switching_alternator
more research is needed  :-//
can you show the ends too? mounting bracket drive shaft axle.  if its precision engineered or milled its avionics.

"This makes them suitable for their only widespread use, in guided missiles" :scared:

Maybe try to contact EAD and ask for a datasheet?

I could do that..
Don't know if they will answer though since it may be a discontinued model etc..

The label says dual frequency alternator 900RPM 15/135cy. 3.5V.
So it looks pretty obvious to me what it is and what it does:
If you turn it at 900rpm, there will be 3.5V at 15Hz at one output and 3.5V at 135Hz at the other one.
Based on the high resistance of the coils it is not designed for generating power, but it is probably used to measure the rpm.

So it isn't much useful at all.

Hmm,so no that useful after all..

So the motor "shaft" has to be put in motion by another motor turning at about 900rpm in order to do its thing?

If that's the only way to operate this one I think I'll just try my luck with another motor...

It is designed as an alternator, so it is designed to be be turned by another motor.
Maybe it can be used as a synchronous motor, but it won't be much powerful:
3.5V/159.4ohms=22mA. So at best case the motor produces less than 40mW. That is probably barely enough to overcome its own fricton.

Thanks for the info bktemp.
So the 2 pairs of cables are outputs only.Correct?

Yes, according to the label: One outputs 1 cycle per revolution, the other one 9 cycles.

I'm all out of guided missiles atm so I don't really have a use for it..
I guess I'll start looking for more conventional motors..

Even if you can't use it as a motor you should still keep it. Maybe you could build a tachometer with it, an arduino, and a small LCD.  Then you could find exactly how fast whatever new motors you get are turning
