My first oscilloscope but without probes, help me please
« on: February 20, 2014, 11:52:24 pm »
i'm a total noob in electronics (consumer), but i want to learn more of it, in my free time.

This oscilloscope was just collecting dust, so i asked if i could have it for free (i know a guy that teaches in an college)

Trio 15 MHz Oscilloscope CS-1560A - http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/trio_kenwo_15_mhz_oscilloscope_cs_1560a.html

But there was no probes with it, i don't know if i can use something from a newer model, or from an another brand.

What kind of probes should i buy ?

(i saw , didn't find it so easy to understand)

thanks in advance :)

Just about any inexpensive 10x probe rated for 60 or 100MHz or less will work. Probes with higher BW probably won't have the compensation range needed for your scope, do stick to the lower BW probes, such as 20 or 40 MHz.

I bought cheap Uni-T Probes off ebay and they where pretty nice .. Like everyone said  make sure the compensation is proper for the scope otherwise your measurements will be off ..

Alligator "probes" will only be 1x, and thus will be very limited in bandwidth and will present a lot of capacitive loading to the circuit under test.

There are mini-grabber hooks (witch's hats) are available for traditional probes, which you can use if you want hands free operation.

so should i pick an 40MHz or 60MHz probe ? (20MHz is too low, right ?)

If the input capacitance of your scope input is between 15pF to 45pF, then the 60MHz probe will work just fine, and give you a little future-proofing in case you get a slightly faster scope in the future.

Most of the advise I would have gave you has already been posted, If you search eBay, you can find tons on new probes for a decent price. If your willing to wait 2-3 weeks, you can get them direct from China for have the cost.

Radio Tech, I bought probes similar to these for my 2235 and DB 5100.  They seem to work just fine. :-+
