Discrete Amplifiers and Linearity
« on: March 18, 2014, 02:23:13 pm »
I'm trying fill some of my knowledge gaps. I've done bipolar and FET circuits but generally when linearity was important (audio, instrumentation etc) I used opamps. I've never had a great grasp on designing for low-distortion with discrete parts (apart from "add some feedback somewhere"). Are there any good references for this? Books are fine, ones with old editions I can get cheap are even better.

Here's a few books that might be of interest:
Designing Audio Power Amplifiers
High-Power Audio Amplifier Construction Manual
The Audiophile's Project Sourcebook: 80 High-Performance Audio Electronics Projects

Another good source (free), would be papers/articles by Nelson Pass (here, and here).

Audiophiles and linearity ... that seems a contradiction in terms.

Thanks, I'll take a look through these.

I've also had Paul Gray's "Analysis and Design of Analog Integrated Circuits" recommended, I may look into this first as there are lots of used copies available cheap.

To add to the book list, Douglas Self's Audio Power Amplifier Design:
