Need help with faulty power supply
« on: July 07, 2013, 05:43:34 am »
Hi guys,
Need your help here:
My friend's wife got a new sewing machine from the states (we live in the EU), and pluged it directly to the wall...
I opened it up and replaced the blown fuse, but while plugging it back to the socket (via ac-ac adapter this time), the magic smoke appeared.
I opened it up once again, and fond out that the MOV blew up...
the voltage in the adapter was 120VAC.

my questions:
1. Is it possible that the MOV was damaged during the first operation?
2. As the MOV is unidentifiable, and no schematics are available, what MOV should i pick for replacement?

Thanks in advance,
Jonathan

If the AC-Ac adaptor is light enough to lift with one hand, or fits in it, it is the wrong type. That is a light dimmer in a glorified box that is meant to run US heaters like clothes irons and coffee cup warmers in the 230V world, not to run motors or electronics.

You need a transformer that has the right current rating to run your sewing machine, probably around 300VA will do for most sewing machines. The MOV is a 130V unit that you will find at RS.
