Try it with acidic flux core solder. I never had pitting on my tips until I tried a corrosive flux core solder and it messed up the tips the next day, the plating was gone and it was beyond repair. All I could do was to file it down.

Right, but surely we are talking about electronic soldering here, and it is advised never to use acid core flux anywhere near electronics? In my comments I am certainly referring only to electronic solder fluxes like rosin (R, RMA, RA) or no-clean.

I have a WES51 and if I'm not applying heat to a joint in the next minute or so, I turn the iron off.  It only takes 15-20 secs to reheat and so far I am still using the original tip that came with the unit.  I also have the temp knob set to 630 F (have no idea what the real temp is) and appears to work well with both 60/40 and 63/37 RMA solders.
