New alternation of switching bench PSU KPS3010D
« on: March 30, 2018, 06:49:15 pm »
Hello, I'm thinking about purchasing some compact PSU and because I'm mostly into digital stuff, SMPS should be fine.
On ebay I found this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/263409876529
Formfactor and specification looks to be same as in multiple models/clones, but this one has digital controls with encoder which I like.
Tried to find some reviews but I couldn't, as this one has generic model name used with many models...
I guess power part should be the same as in other similar products, but what about front panel and it's digital interface/controls?
What do you think?

I'd pass...

Search Google - there is at least one forum entry discussing the PS and why/how it broke.

And unless the seller is prepared to list the ripple spec I'd pass on it too.

Most switchers are noisy and even trying to replicate manufacturers ripple specs can be tricky to do as their scope setting are such to present the best possible results.
But if you are happy to add the additional output filtering and additional bulk capacitance in any of your projects.....go for it.
Me, if zero ripple spec is offered I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole !

So is there something better in similar price range, power and size?
If I would be rich or live from electronics I would get rigol or something of this class without thinking much.

Of course there is......anything with a full specification !

None of the cheap switchers are anything flash.... but they do have a place on and around the bench.
In time you'll want something that provides clean DC and you can only get that with $ or something you might build.

What are you 'must haves' in a PSU ?

Not much really:
Compact
At least 30V/10A
Under 100GBP or 150GBP if you'll convince me

I was attempting to build one(linear) myself but couldn't find time to finish it.

Maybe look at something by MCH.
We've had a good run with their K305D (30V, 5A)

I have heard their 10A version is not as good but nctnico hasn't mentioned any problems with his.

This one?:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-MCH-K3010D-30V-10A-DC-Power-Supply-Mini-Switching-Regulated-Adjustable-SMPS/263290584166?epid=1583509649&hash=item3d4d577c66:g:9EQAAOSwVNxZ-Rmi
Only directly from china...
Also not necessarily but I would like it to have digital controls with encoder ;p

Yes, and you can find the specs here:
http://www.china-mch.com/index.php/en/info/250.html

Edit
You won't match the listed ripple spec without some massaging of scope settings......no Peak detect, Averages....plenty, and so on.

Yeah this one looks to be a good choice, so thanks for recommendation.
But it kindas sucks that it's only from china.
Do you know other brands that sell this exact PSU?

Yeah there are some rebrands but I only know them when I spot them.
Just search the 'bay with only a model #, leave MCH out.  ;)

If they look very much the same, they're from the same manufacturer.
The only difference might be binding posts instead of banana sockets as the might be specified by 'their' (MCH) customer.

MCH have even asked me if I want a customized version.  ::)
I don't buy much from then but they've been willing to stand behind their products and even offered me the IC's when my K305D display died. Ones in the 'field' have been good although we did have some internal screws that weren't tight enough come loose on one unit. Customer checked all their units and moved on.

Ok accepted ones with binding posts but still nothing in UK.
Also some of the MCH-K305D have 4-digit display and other 3-digit display, both have same model number, stupid...

You know in my position I would love to get some faulty high end PSU for cheap and then repair it, but here there's almost none...

Ok so I got mine and of course cracked it open, looks like they made few changes(compared to the unit from your link), no current sensor on primary side, different binding posts, and some other layout/component changes.
