New to electronics, power supply build.
« on: June 23, 2014, 09:59:25 am »
Hi there, I am just getting into electronics and I had a poke around for a good starter project and came across this LM317 adjustable power supply. My question is about the capacitors, what is the function of the 0.1µF and 0.22µF capacitors? I have seen a few tutorials on similar power supplies and I only see the input and output capacitors in those tutorials.

This device in order to "regulate" needs a feedback network (220R, 5k pot). Due to the feedback action the circuit has the tendency to oscillate. Adding capacitors stabilizes the circuit. Someone could say that the capacitors acts like a path to the ground for the ac components created by the oscillations.
