NGD8205N replacement? What to look for comparing IGBTs?
« on: March 29, 2017, 05:32:55 am »
I have somehow ended up with an aftermarket car ECU that requires repairs.

Both ignition coil drivers have gone bad, and by bad, I mean they are burnt holes in the board while desoldering themselves.

As a result, there really aren't any pads to fit a replacement SMD device, so I'm looking to go TO220, and mount them to the case.

But, I'm rather lost when it comes to finding a suitable part, the datasheet for the current part is here:
http://www.mouser.com/ds/2/308/ngd8205n-d-304413.pdf

Any advise would be fantastic! Thanks.

An excellent resource is usually the vendor website for tech help, especially
things like substitutions. You need to supply application, environment,
and help usually forthcoming. Schematic quite helpful.

That being said a circuit design for safe area, drive, and thermal considerations
is not like picking toothpicks out of a box for gum jam relief.

I would focus on gate C, Max rated breakdown voltages, operating current
and saturation voltage, speed.

How do you know it's only the IGBTs which have gone bad? If they've failed that catastrophically, it's likely they've taken down other components with them.

I don't have a schematic, and its pretty difficult to follow traces on the board, which I suspect the manufacturer intentionally did.

I don't know that its just the IGBT's, but I don't have an easy way to feed it the required signals to see if everything else is functional.
I know it powers up, and will still communicate with a PC via rs232, so that's a start at least.

I contacted the manufacturer of the ecu, and they said I could use these:

They did also end their statement with a question mark and its obsolete, so I'm not so sure...

I was considering using these:
