Non-functioning oscilloscope?
« on: October 26, 2017, 02:24:32 am »
Hi, I recently bought a Tek 2225 scope on eBay. The screen produces a trace and can display both channels at the same time. But when I hooked it up to my function generator, it does not produce a trace whatsoever. What are some troubleshooting steps I can take or should I just return it?
Thanks

Check that you have coupling in DC position first. If this is the case, then only disassembly and inspection will tell.

set your vertical resolution to it's largest volt/div setting and slow down your horizontal time base.

If this is your first scope, read the operators manual to understand the effects of the controls.

There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

Set scope to page 4-1, 4-2 settings, trigger to auto, trigger source to INT (internal), vertical to AC.

Try the inbuilt probe adjustment signal. It's just to the left of the trigger BNC socket. But as people mentioned, an analog oscilloscope requires familiarity with the oscilloscope to manually setup the trigger, coupling, horizontal/vertical etc properly.

Try both channels, you might also want to check your probe as well and swap it if you have two, or test with a multimeter.

The first thing to do is make sure you know how to properly use it. I'm not trying to suggest you don't, but more than once people have brought me "broken" scopes that in fact worked just fine, they just didn't know how to operate it.
